A dead lamp is one of the most satisfying household problems to solve, because roughly four times out of five the cause sits entirely outside the lamp: a burned-out bulb, a switched-off outlet, a tripped strip. It is also one of the easiest problems to turn dangerous, because the moment you open the socket shell or split the cord jacket you have left everyday care and entered mains electrical work. The whole art here is to chase every external, reversible cause first, and to recognize the exact point where a lamp stops being a lamp you fix and becomes a lamp you either take to a repairer or retire.

Start by separating the lamp from the wall

Before you touch a screwdriver, decide whether the problem is even inside the lamp. Plug the lamp into an outlet you know works, ideally one you have just tested with a phone charger or a different lamp. Wall switches control half of many living-room outlets, so confirm the switch on the wall is up. Power strips and surge protectors have their own switch and their own breaker; a strip that took a small surge can quietly cut power to everything on it while its indicator light still glows. Ruling the outlet in or out takes thirty seconds and saves you from opening a lamp that was never broken.

If the outlet is live and the lamp is still dark, swap in a bulb you have personally seen light up somewhere else. This matters more than it sounds. A brand-new bulb straight from the pack can be dead, and filament and LED bulbs both fail in ways that look fine to the eye. A known-good bulb is the single most useful diagnostic tool you own for this problem. While the bulb is out, look into the socket: the little brass tab at the bottom sometimes flattens over the years and stops touching the base of the bulb. With the lamp unplugged, and only then, you can gently lift that tab a millimeter with a wooden or plastic tool. That is about the deepest a keeper reaches into a socket.

Reading the switch and the cord from the outside

If bulb and outlet both check out, the fault is somewhere between the plug and the socket, which means the switch, the cord, or the internal wiring. You can learn a lot without opening anything. Turn the switch slowly with the lamp unplugged and feel for grit, a mushy click, or a knob that spins without catching. A crackle or flicker when you wiggle the switch under power is a real warning sign, not a quirk to live with. Run your fingers along the whole cord and look for cracked jacket, kinks, flattened spots where furniture has parked on it for years, and the two high-stress zones: right where the cord leaves the plug and right where it enters the lamp base. A cord that is warm anywhere, discolored near the plug, or showing any glint of copper is finished.

This is the honest boundary of the job. Replacing a lamp cord or a socket switch means working on the wiring that connects to your home’s mains, and it involves strain relief, correct polarity, and terminations that will not loosen and arc inside a base you cannot see into. That is competent work, but it is not casual work, and it is not reversible in the way cleaning a contact is. If the trail leads into the cord or the switch body, the two good outcomes are a qualified repairer or a responsible retirement, not tape and hope.

What quietly makes a lamp worse

The mistakes that hurt here almost all come from treating a live device as an inert one. Never open a plugged-in lamp, even for a peek. Never wrap a cracked cord in electrical tape and put it back into service; tape hides the fault, it does not remove the heat or the exposed conductor underneath. Never fit a bulb rated hotter than the socket or shade allows, because the label on the socket is a fire limit, not a suggestion, and this is doubly tempting with old lamps and bright LED equivalents. And never keep using a lamp that has given you a shock, a spark, a scorch mark, or a whiff of hot plastic. Those are not intermittent gremlins to wait out. They are the lamp telling you the decision has already been made.

The beginner pass, in order

Kept narrow, the whole safe routine is: confirm the outlet with something else, fit a bulb you have seen work, check the socket tab with the lamp unplugged, and inspect the switch and cord from the outside for damage, heat, or crackle. If that sequence restores the light, you are genuinely done and the fix was as safe as dusting. If it does not, you have not failed; you have narrowed the fault to the wiring and reached the edge of the reversible zone. That is exactly the information a lamp repair shop wants, and it is the information that tells you whether an inexpensive lamp is worth carrying anywhere at all.

When to hand it off, and how

Take a lamp to a professional when the cord or internal wiring is suspect, when the switch arcs or the socket is loose in the base, or when the piece is valuable enough that its wiring deserves proper rework rather than replacement of the whole fixture. Sentiment is a fair reason to pay for a rewire; a well-made or inherited lamp can outlive several cords. Before you carry it in, note the socket type and bulb rating printed near the socket, and jot down exactly what you observed: dark with a known-good bulb, live outlet, crackle in the switch, warm plug. That short description turns a vague drop-off into a fast, accurate quote.

Keep the next lamp trouble-free

Most lamp faults are wear, and wear responds to routing. Keep cords out from under chair legs and rug edges where they get crushed and flexed, use the bulb wattage the socket asks for, and unplug rather than yank when you move a lamp so the strain-relief at the plug survives. When you do resolve a dead lamp, write it down: the object, the date, whether it was bulb, outlet, switch, or cord, and whether you would keep this lamp again. Over a year those one-line notes teach you which of your lamps are worth their cords and which quietly belong on the retire list.
